New results from NA48 experiment on neutral kaon rare decays

Get PDF
Recent results by the NA48 collaboration on neutral kaons rare decays into the pi+ pi- e+ e- final state are presented. A large CP-violating asymmetry A(K_L)=(13.9+-2.7+-2.0)% has been observed in the K_L to pi+ pi- e+ e- decay. The K_S to pi+ pi- e+ e- decay has been observed for the first time, showing no such asymmetry.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX. Limits on axion and light Higgs boson production in Y(1S) decays

Get PDF
We have searched for axion and light Higgs boson production in the channel Y(1S) → (a0 or h0)+gamma, where the non-interacting axion a0 and the Higgs boson h0 do not decay in the detector. We find no evidence for an axion and give an upper limit, Br(Y(1S) -> a0 gamma) <4.0x10(-5) (90% CL), for long-lived axions. Combining our limit with the previous search in J/Psi decays, we are able to rule out the axion in the standard model with first order QCD corrections. Our Y(1S) data also rule out a Higgs boson with mass m<86 MeV

Intrinsic time resolution of 3D-trench silicon pixels for charged particle detection

Get PDF
In the last years, high-resolution time tagging has emerged as the tool to tackle the problem of high-track density in the detectors of the next generation of experiments at particle colliders. Time resolutions below 50ps and event average repetition rates of tens of MHz on sensor pixels having a pitch of 50μ\mum are typical minimum requirements. This poses an important scientific and technological challenge on the development of particle sensors and processing electronics. The TIMESPOT initiative (which stands for TIME and SPace real-time Operating Tracker) aims at the development of a full prototype detection system suitable for the particle trackers of the next-to-come particle physics experiments. This paper describes the results obtained on the first batch of TIMESPOT silicon sensors, based on a novel 3D MEMS (micro electro-mechanical systems) design. Following this approach, the performance of other ongoing silicon sensor developments has been matched and overcome, while using a technology which is known to be robust against radiation degradation. A time resolution of the order of 20ps has been measured at room temperature suggesting also possible improvements after further optimisations of the front-end electronics processing stage.Comment: This version was accepted to be published on JINST on 21/07/202

Fabrication and Characterisation of 3D Diamond Pixel Detectors With Timing Capabilities

Get PDF
Diamond sensors provide a promising radiation hard solution to the challenges posed by the future experiments at hadron machines. A 3D geometry with thin columnar resistive electrodes orthogonal to the diamond surface, obtained by laser nanofabrication, is expected to provide significantly better time resolution with respect to the extensively studied planar diamond sensors. We report on the development, production, and characterisation of innovative 3D diamond sensors achieving 30% improvement in both space and time resolution with respect to sensors from the previous generation. This is the first complete characterisation of the time resolution of 3D diamond sensors and combines results from tests with laser, beta rays and high energy particle beams. Plans and strategies for further improvement in the fabrication technology and readout systems are also discussed

Spectroscopy of 98Ru

Get PDF
The nucleus 98 Ru has been investigated by means of γ - γ coincidence, γ - γ angular correlation and K-internal conversion coefficient measurements. The results have led to spin-parity assignment to several levels and to the determination of E 2/ M 1 mixing ratios for the most intense transitions

Search for heavy neutral lepton production in K+ decays

Get PDF
A search for heavy neutral lepton production in K + decays using a data sample collected with a minimum bias trigger by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2015 is reported. Upper limits at the 10−7 to 10−6 level are established on the elements of the extended neutrino mixing matrix |Ue4| 2 and |Uμ4| 2 for heavy neutral lepton mass in the ranges 170–448 MeV/c2 and 250–373 MeV/c2, respectively. This improves on the previous limits from HNL production searches over the whole mass range considered for |Ue4|2 and above 300 MeV/c2 for |Uμ4|2

Precise tests of low energy QCD from Ke4 decay properties

We report results from the analysis of the K\ub1 → pi+ pi 12 e\ub1 \u3bd (Ke4 ) decay by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS, based on the total statistics of 1.13 million decays collected in 2003–2004. The hadronic form factors in the S- and P-wave and their variation with energy are obtained. The phase difference between the S- and P-wave states of the pion pion system is accurately measured and allows a precise determination of a00 and a02 , the I = 0 and I = 2 S-wave pion pion scattering lengths: a00 = 0.2220 \ub1 0.0128stat \ub1 0.0050syst \ub1 0.0037th , a02 = 120.0432 \ub1 0.0086stat \ub1 0.0034syst \ub1 0.0028th . Combination of this result with the other NA48/2 measurement obtained in the study of K\ub1 → pi0 pi0 pi\ub1 decays brings an improved determination of a00 and the first precise experimental measurement of a02, providing a stringent test ofChiral Perturbation Theory predictions and lattice QCD calculations. Using constraints based on analyticity and chiral symmetry, even more precise values are obtained: a00 = 0.2196 \ub1 0.0028stat \ub1 0.0020syst and a02 = 120.0444 \ub10.0007stat \ub1 0.0005syst \ub1 0.0008ChPT

A measurement of the transverse polarization of Lambda-hyperons produced in inelastic pN-reactions at 450 GeV proton energy

Get PDF
A study of the polarization of Λ hyperons produced in inelastic pN reactions induced by the 450 GeV proton beam from the CERN SPS has been performed with the NA48 detector. The Λ hyperons were detected at a fixed angle of 4.2 mrad in the momentum range from 50 GeV/c to 200 GeV/c. The polarization changes from −0.053 ± 0.034 to −0.298 ± 0.074 for a transverse momentum range of the Λ between 0.28 GeV/c and 0.86 GeV/c. The antiΛ polarization is consistent with zero
